Wired news ran an interesting story about visitorville, a tool that visualizes web traffic in a SimCity kind of way. Web sites are neighbourhoods, web pages are buildings, buses represent visitors referred by search engines, etc. I hope someone is doing empirical evaluation studies on how well this approach works?

In any case, I like the novel way of looking at web traffic analysis. I have mentioned before that I see strong potential for information visualization techniques in order to make it easier to get to relevant learning objects. (Indeed, we have a paper on “Using Information Visualization for accessing Learning Object Repositories at IV04.) I’m wondering how SimCity like approaches could be used to visualize what is actually happening in the world of Learning Object Repositories. Sounds like a fun project to me!
